I have a question about the register rewards from CVS and Walgreens.

For example: Something is $4.99, and you get $2 register rewards. I notice people saying that it is like only paying $2.99 for the product.
But really you are paying the actual $4.99 for the product. You are saving the $2 on your next product, not the $4.99 one, right?

I am just a little confused when people saying they are only paying $2.99. I understand that would be the price minus the $2. But the $2 is for next time you shop. right? It's $2 off your next purchase??
