I have the Fisher Price DVD's. The beauty of these are they can be used at home as well as in the car and you can also hook them up to the TV so they can watch movies from a regular tv or at someone's home.
Downside is although it is kid proof the kids can still stick their fingers in the DVD player and break it. My DVD players still work after a year but every so often the DVD will stick to the annoyance of my kids.
But I'm glad I have this model as its kept my kids quiet on road trips and at peoples homes.
I'm not sure of price now but I paid just over $100 but I remember seeing them on clearance in the January sale at Target.
This DVD would be good for your 3 year old but for your 11 year old it might be too babyish so maybe you can get the older one a regular DVD player.
If you can afford it I recommend an itouch as you can download movies/shows on the itouch and kids can watch. Plus side is its very light to carry. Downside is its expensive and you can't play DVD's on an itouch.
