Thanks Pam for the answer--I did notice on my last load that the color lightened a bit. I have always wanted to try making soap--I thought the kids would think it was kind of neat too, but the idea of grating a bar of soap seems like so much work--I am sure it isn't, but it seems that way. Maybe I will work it into our curriculum in a couple weeks and I will be forced to do it and see how easy it is.

I made homemade soap the other day like I used to do. I love making my own soap for the laundry and you wont believe how I make it. Similar to the Duggar's but cheaper and it works so good. I have been doing it for years.
I get a bar of homemade goats milk soap at the craft mall. I grate it with my cheese grater and then put in sauce pan and add a couple cups of water. I cook on low while stirring until melted. then I pour into a gallon jug (i use a pickle jug) I fill the rest of the way with warm water and stir well. I let it sit over night and then in the morning I stir well and then pour half of the mixture into another gallon jug. I then fill both jugs to the top with water and put lids on them and let them sit over night. by the next morning soap is ready to use. it is thick and a bit slimy looking. but talk about a great soap and your clothes come out so clean and fresh. I always get lavender scented goats milk soap. even when it has been diluted down like this. there is just enough scent to make it smell fresh. when they make a bar of soap. it last a long long time. that is because it is so concentrated and condensed. that is why you can get so much soap out of one little bar, I use 1/2 cup in each load I do. I mix it right into the water coming in the tub and then put the clothes in there. Give it a try. you can use any brand of soap you want. You can buy suave even. I used to use suave. but now I try to use everything organic so that is why I use the goats milk soap. the one I buy is organic. this is such a fun thing you can do for your family. Laundry detergent is so expensive, and loaded with chemicals. this is clean, cheap and no chemicals on your body anymore. I always feel so good about saving so much money on Laundry soap and then knowing that there are no chemicals going into my septic tank or on us is such an added bonus.

I would get about 6 loads out of a pouch. They would still have some suds, but I was afraid that after that many washings, even if they had a little left they might not be cleaning properly. Mine never turned gray or mushy either.

I have a soap nut question. I have been using them for maybe a month now, and mine never turn grey or mushy like the directions say they will. I put five in the bag and soak it in hot water for the first load and then do four or five loads with that on laundry day. After the last load I check them and they look the same and if I squish them, suds still come out. Am I doing something wrong? Do I just need to count and throw them out after 5 loads or so? Or am I really lucky enough to be getting so much use? The clothes smell fresh coming from the wash still, but then again even if I don't use soap--like back when I didn't know how to stockpile, the clothes smelled clean I guess. Any ideas?

"My 2 kids absolutely love the kind Amazon has on special, the Deluxe shells and cheddar cheese. http://www.amazon.com/Annies-Homegro...1VAX3714SN0CMY We tried the ones in the smaller boxes and didn't care for them. We have never bought Kraft, but when they get mac n cheese in restaurants, they always say it isn't as good as what we eat at home. I actually ordered 2 cases it was such a good deal compared to what I would pay in my stores."

Thank you for the recommendation, I appreciate it!

Can anyone recommend a type of Annies Mac and Cheese is popular with your kids? The Amazon deal this month looks great. I have tried other organic mac and cheese and my kids did not like it. They like the whole grain kraft mac and cheese, but I am trying to find an organic version they will like. Are any of the Annies similar to kraft?

Thank you for the suggestions, I think we will try a box before ordering from Amazon. I don't want 12 boxes if my kids don't like it. I also noticed Back to Nature has Mac and Cheese, anyone tried this brand? I have made homemade mac and cheese and my kids don't like it, I prefer homemade myself.

"It took a little getting used to, but now we like the regular blue boxed one, but I add a little extra cheddar cheese. My friend's kids will only eat the one that comes with the pouch of sauce--I think it was an orange box--it is like the Kraft shells and cheese."
